Check Your Electrical Panel
Look for breakers in the middle position, scorch marks, or a burning smell. Any of these require immediate professional attention.
Test All GFCI Outlets
Press the TEST button on GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchen, garage, and outdoor areas. Power should cut off. Press RESET to restore.
Inspect Visible Wiring
Check attic, basement, and crawl space for cracked, frayed, or exposed wiring. Never cover old wiring with insulation.
Count Outlets Per Room
Modern code requires outlets every 6 feet along walls. Relying on extension cords is a fire hazard — consider adding outlets.
Check Outdoor Outlets
All outdoor outlets must have weatherproof covers and GFCI protection. Verify covers close tightly and gaskets aren't cracked.
Test Smoke & CO Detectors
Press the test button on every detector. Replace batteries annually. Replace entire units every 10 years.
Inspect Light Switch & Outlet Plates
Any covers that feel warm to the touch or show discoloration signal dangerous heat buildup inside — call an electrician.
Look for Overloaded Circuits
If breakers trip when running multiple appliances, your panel or circuits may be undersized for modern electrical loads.
Verify Two-Prong Outlets Are Replaced
Ungrounded two-prong outlets offer no shock protection. Upgrade to GFCI-protected three-prong outlets in key areas.
Schedule a Professional Safety Inspection
Even if everything looks fine, a licensed electrician can identify hidden hazards inside walls. Dausman Electric offers free inspections for homeowners of non-listed properties.
