If your Winston-Salem home was built between 1965 and 1973, there's a significant chance it was wired with aluminum conductors instead of copper. During this period, a national copper shortage drove builders to use aluminum wiring — and decades later, we now know this creates a serious fire hazard that requires professional attention.

What Homes Have Aluminum Wiring?

Aluminum wiring was used extensively in residential construction from approximately 1965 through 1973. If your home was built during this window — common in Winston-Salem neighborhoods like Ardmore, Sherwood Forest, and other mid-century developments — you should have your wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.

You can identify aluminum wiring by looking at the wire sheathing in your panel or at outlet boxes. Aluminum conductors are typically marked "AL" or "Aluminum" on the wire insulation. They have a silvery appearance rather than the copper-gold color of copper wire.

Why Aluminum Wiring Is a Fire Risk

Aluminum wiring isn't inherently dangerous in the same way that knob-and-tube wiring is — the wire itself can carry current safely. The problem lies in how aluminum behaves at connection points:

Oxidation: When aluminum oxidizes, it forms a resistant surface layer that increases electrical resistance at connection points. This resistance generates heat — enough to ignite surrounding materials.

Thermal expansion: Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper when heated and cooled. Over decades of thermal cycling, connections at outlets, switches, and breakers gradually loosen. Loose connections create arcing — a leading cause of electrical fires.

Cold flow (creep): Under the pressure of a screw terminal, aluminum slowly deforms and "flows" away from the connection point. This loosens connections over time, even without thermal cycling.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach "fire hazard" conditions than homes wired with copper.

Insurance Implications for Homes with Aluminum Wiring in NC

Many NC insurance companies now require disclosure of aluminum wiring and may:

  • Charge significantly higher premiums
  • Require remediation before issuing or renewing a policy
  • Refuse to write new policies for homes with unremediated aluminum wiring
  • Require an electrical inspection report before binding coverage

If you're purchasing a home built between 1965 and 1973, your insurance company may require an electrical inspection as a condition of coverage. Addressing aluminum wiring before closing can streamline the insurance process and avoid last-minute complications.

How to Identify Aluminum Wiring in Your Home

Check your panel: Look at the wires entering your circuit breakers. If they have a silvery appearance (rather than copper-gold), they're likely aluminum. Look for "AL" or "Aluminum" stamped on the wire insulation.

Check at outlets: Remove an outlet cover plate and shine a flashlight at the wire connections. Aluminum wires will look silver. Do not touch the wires — only look. If you're not comfortable doing this, an electrician can check for you.

Look for warning signs: Warm or discolored outlet covers, flickering lights, or a burning smell near outlets can indicate failing aluminum wire connections. These are emergencies — call an electrician immediately.

Remediation Options: Pigtailing vs. Full Rewire

Option 1: Copper Pigtailing (Most Common Remediation)

The most widely accepted remediation involves connecting short pieces of copper wire ("pigtails") to the aluminum wires at every outlet, switch, and junction box. The copper pigtail connects to the device, while the aluminum wire connects to the copper pigtail via a specially rated connector.

This approach addresses the failure point — the aluminum-to-device connection — by moving the aluminum connection to a controlled, properly rated connector. The CPSC recognizes specific connectors (AlumiConn and COPALUM) as effective remediation methods.

Cost: $50–$100 per outlet/switch for AlumiConn connectors + labor. A typical 2,000 sq ft home with 60–80 devices costs $3,000–$8,000 total.

Option 2: Full Rewiring (Permanent Solution)

Full rewiring removes all aluminum wiring and replaces it with modern copper cable. This is the most comprehensive and permanent solution — no future remediation is ever needed, and your home's wiring meets current code completely.

Pigtailing is appropriate when:

  • You plan to sell the home within 5–10 years
  • Budget constraints make full rewiring impractical
  • The rest of your electrical system (panel, grounding) is in good condition

Full rewiring is the better choice when:

  • You plan to stay in the home long-term
  • Your panel also needs upgrading
  • You're already doing a major renovation with walls open
  • Your insurance company requires full remediation
